The song was about prejudice. And the best way to highlight that is to take the part of the ignorant idiot.

In the 70s, you could be hateful. Stupid and ignorant was not only tolerated, it seemed to be popular. This was the time the school sport Dodgeball was popular - exploit the weak. Basically, shine the light on someone else’s flaws.

A great way to do this in 1977 was by singing the song “Short People”. You know they got no reason to live. Not my words, those are from Randy Newman. You know, the guy that likes to describe what’s happening in song verse, which isn’t irritating at all.

Since I was fat, and didn’t want people pointing that out, I would play this song to deflect the spotlight.  A lot of people must have been doing the same thing, since this song went to number 2, and would’ve hit number one if it wasn’t for the Bee Gees. Let's all go back to a simpler, stupid time, with Randy Newman and "Short People".
