We're celebrating the fall of 80s rock on today's Cassette Classic.

One of the things that hurt the most for me musically, was the death of 80s rock, and the creation of the 90s rock. I hated it because by the time 1990 hit, my angst was gone. I was secure with my life, and the only thing I was angry about - besides stupid people being allowed to drive next to me - was the rising popularity of the prosaic rock that was coming out of Seattle.

I made a joke that some of the new songs should have a shotgun sound effect at the end of it. Needless to say I had to stop telling that joke.

But looking back, the 80s rock formula was getting very tired. Nine slamming rock songs, then a ballad for song number 10. Soon the record companies were only releasing the Ballad. At that point you’re not a Heavy Metal band, you’re Maria Carey.

This next Cassette Classic was one of the last songs to be a hit. It’s from Giant, and it’s “I’ll See You in My Dreams”. I heard it played at a few weddings, but the marriages lasted about as long as 80s heavy metal.
