R.I.P R And B Powerhouse Bobby Womack
Update: Sad news to report: Bobby Womack passed away Friday at the age of 70. This is very sad. Although he had a tough go of it in his later years, he did cap of his career with a substantial comeback. R.I.P. Midnight Mover, Bobby Womack. Here is the Song Of The Day from earlier this month.
This is being written late at night, so forgive me if it goes astray. It's funny how time affects your feelings on music and art. Especially late at night. And that's when the raspy soulful "I seen some #@!" voice of Bobby Womack works best.
Give it a late hour listen, alone, and this guy's music can leave scorch marks on your soul, if you're of a mind. The truth hits harder in the dark of night, and Womack's music ain't nothing but the truth, coming straight at you through the bars of a rhyme.
It was hard to pick just one song from Bobby for this post. The super gritty "Across 110TH Street", super wise and soulful, "Woman's Gotta Have It", even his collaboration with Damon from Blur/The Gorrilaz, the supremely beaten down "Please Forgive My Heart." Rolling Stone came up with a list of ten you might be interested in checking out.
