Walk in the Park With Big Q – Yettie Polk Park
You might not be able to tell by looking, but I sit down at my job for about 80% of the day. Which is fine by me, but my physic is bound to kill me one day, and since I'm not looking to die, I figured it was time I used my weekends to a good cause. I decided to visit all the parks in Central Texas. Yep, it's Fat Man Walking time. First up is Yettie Polk Park in downtown Belton.
It was named for Mrs. Yettie Tobler Polk, and her 4 children, after a devastating flood in 1913. I enjoyed this park. I initially found it by accident. I had jury duty right after they moved out to the new courthouse by the Bell County Expo, but I went to the one downtown first. While trying to turn-a-round, I found this park. I went back the next weekend and shot baskets at one of the two courts that they have.
You can also see a jungle gym behind the court, so there's something for all ages. Since I'm a wide person, I liked that the paths themselves were wide, making it easy for other walkers and bikers to pass me. They also have plenty of wildlife around. The stream/creek/river, depending on how much rain we get, provides a nice home for Ducks, Geese, and I'm guessing Mallard's, along with other birds.
Be warned, they are people trained. Meaning, if you show up with food, they will follow you like a hungry puppy. It can be kind of disturbing if you're a horror movie fan.
There's a lovely Gazebo that could be used as a stage for entertainment, with plenty of seating. There's also another one down stream a bit that seems to be popular for photos.
