Break out the drawing paper and get ready to relive those days of coloring books and Crayola Crayons, as we celebrate National Crayola Crayon Day.

On March 31st in 1903 Binney & Smith, Inc began selling their Crayola Crayons to the public.  The first box of eight contained red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, and black sticks.  It sold for a nickel.

Do you remember your first box of crayons?  I don't but I do remember the big chunky ones versus the skinny ones. I remember never owning the big box of 64 because we had five kids and that was way too much money. I coveted that box, it had a sharpener in it!

I remember the first day of 2nd grade in Germany and I did not have my school supplies because once again we had five kids and we had to wait until payday. Anyway we had to color that first day of school, with our new crayons, but all I had was a tiny piece of purple crayon crumb that was lodged in a desk crack. I dug it out and used it till it was gone.  The teacher finally took pity on me and let me use the poor kids crayons.

So Sad, but back to Crayola facts.

Crayola crayons now come in 120 colors including 23 reds, 20 greens, 19 blues, 16 purples, 14 oranges, 11 browns, 8 yellows, 2 grays, 2 coppers, 2 blacks, 1 white, 1 gold and 1 silver. Binney & Smith produce nearly 3 billion crayons each year, an average of twelve million daily. That’s enough to circle the globe 6 times.

Now kids the moment you have been waiting for, Mr Rogers takes us to the Crayola factory so we can see the magic of crayon making.

Mr. Rogers was cool and he didn't even know it!

Did you know the smell of Crayola crayons is one of the twenty top scents recognized by adults in the U.S? I believe it because, I love the smell of a good crayon in the morning!
