Before Social Media, getting tragic news was a little more difficult. For example, when John Lennon was shot and killed on this date in 1980, the majority of Americans got the news via Monday Night Football.

I heard about it the next morning while eating breakfast. Have just got our first FM pop station in town, I had no idea who John Lennon was. When I asked my mother, she replied with. "I'm not sure, I think he was in some music group from the 60's". Of course, after he died, every radio station and their pet was playing every John Lennon/Beatles song ever, over and over and over. Within a few months I got to the point where I was sick of John Lennon. It was around this time I learn the phrase..."kicking a dead horse".

Too Soon?

A few years ago, on the 30th Anniversary, Outside the Lines did this piece.

Here's the broadcast announcement from Monday Night Football.
