The one thing you're supposed to do if you're a dance DJ is to drop the bass. But what happens if you're not a klutz, and the bass never gets dropped.

When I was going to Broadcasting School, I took a job as a DJ in a club. This was back in the 80s when DJing in a club was just playing songs so people could dance. The idea of mixing beats was new, and to me is was incomprehensible. To this day it's like a third language with a bad accent.

My goal when I was DJing was to clear the dance floor. Yes, I'm anti-social so my basic

I felt like Moses at the Red Sea

instinct is to make sure everyone is alone. If I had everyone dancing I would purposely put a song on that would make people stop dancing.  For an example. The kids really like Tone-Loc "Funky Cold Medina", so when I played that the dance floor would fill up. A good DJ would want to keep it going by playing some New Kids on the Block. Not me, I'd cue up some Judas Priest "Breaking the Law". When that song hit the speakers, the dance floor would clear out. I felt like Moses at the Red Sea. Yea, I was soon regulated to dealing Black Jack and was not allowed in the DJ booth ever again.

So I find it amusing that this video has gone viral. It's a video of a DJ who is building the musical suspense to the point where a good DJ would do what's known as Dropping the Bass. Here's an example where they intermix dropping the bass fish. I love wordplay?

So here's the viral video from Mashd N Kutcher. You can actually hear the crowd sigh and moan when the DJ doesn't drop the bass but goes into "True" from Spandau Ballet. Which just so happens to be one of the songs I would play at the club.
