"Just one look/ and I fell so hard..."  Gotta love this one. Nothing slick about this. The whole thing is gritty and deep down soulful, like the best Styrofoam plate of fatback and collared greens ever. Linda Ronstadt covered it in the 70's, but sanded off all the rough edges:

Respectable, yes, and she's got kind of a nice line in gravely throat going there, but it's still  more hotel lounge then beat up jukebox at the bar b q joint.

Then there's the Hollies version, which is very British invasion and oh so polite:

 

 

Maybe it's because it's actually the demo recording that went all the way to number ten in 1963, maybe it's because the guitar player's name was "Snags" Allen, whatever the reason, this is the only version you really need in your ears. I give you Doris Troy and your:
