Sad news today.  Legendary bass player, singer and one third of sixties supergroup Cream has passed on to the great gig in the sky. Jack Bruce, whom fellow cream band member Eric Clapton called "A tremendous inspiration to me", was 71.

Cream broke in the end due to what Eric Clapton cited as a case of musicians trying to outdo each other, Jack Bruce powering his bass through increasingly larger stacks of amplifiers, drummer Ginger Baker playing as loud as he could manage. Clapton talks about one show where he just quit playing his guitar and neither of the other band members noticed. Bruce went to a much respected solo career and was much revered as one of rock and roll's most innovative and talented bass players. Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea added, "Oh man. Jack Bruce. Too much. Wow. Holy holy. I love that guy. One of a kind greatness. End of an era."
