Strange the amount of times in writing these Song Of the Day posts is the amount of time I've bounced back to 1979. It was a pivotal year, punk was dying, disco was it's heights, what would be soon classic rock was rounding third into home, and the candy colored skinny tied "new wave" was in full swing, with bands like The Cars and The Knack bumping up against Led Zeppelin and Chic and even Supertramp in the charts.

It was a great time. And along came Joe. Irascible. Sarcastic. Snotty.

Piano pounding song writer Joe Jackson, kinda like Elvis Costello art school cousin, lashing out at the workaday injustices of daily life and in today's tune, seeing that girl you're crushing on going out with some knuckle dragging "gorilla."

Now, that is just one of those songs that started with the title. I heard that phrase somewhere and I thought that could be a kind of funny song about gorgeous girls going out with monsters. It just started from there. It was just a funny song, or supposed to be funny. It was a great surprise to me when some people interpreted it as being angry.
