Last year, our own Aaron Savage went out to the Oscar area to take pictures of flooding which had hit homes and businesses out there.

Flash forward to Saturday night. You would not have known anything like this has ever happened in and around the Oscar Store. Quite simply, the whole place was on and poppin'!

Saturday during the day, I had a hankering for a good steak. I can't eat meat on Fridays so by the time Saturday rolls around I'm craving some cow. I did a search on steaks in Yelp and a number of alternatives came up. As a fan of local holes in the wall, what I saw in photos of the Oscar Store was a place I thought I'd like.  I was right.

Never have I used a formalized rating scale for my restaurant reviews. However, what is undefeatable in my mind is this compliment: this is my kind of place. Can't get any higher than that. A place which were I not on the job I would personally go to eat and hang out. Let's just cut to the chase: the Oscar Store is my kind of place. Right down to the wrought iron version of a wagon wheel light fixture.

The very first taste of the evening was an ice cold bottle of lodestar beer. I have been a fan of this Brou for a long time. People put on their's and act all high for Loupe, disparaging what was long known as the official beer of Texas. They need to stop.

The cosumin' and devourin' started out with a basket of some of the most delicious onion rings I have ever tasted. They were crisp, tangy, sweet, absolute perfection. I alternated between catsup and their homemade ranch dressing as both tastes complemented the rings.  There were several times during the course of the main attraction that I went back to grab a bite of those onion rings, they were that good

Then came the steak which I ordered medium rare along with a baked potato and corn on the cob. When I saw the plate, I thought for a second the meat had been over-cooked, but once I cut myself off of a piece, and then had melt in my mouth,  I knew I was having one of the best pieces of meat this side of Ted's of Beverly Hills.  Highly recommended.

The atmosphere was just right, the Blue Bell ice cream out of the perfect Texas touch.  The people were friendly and the servers - young ladies all - were very attentive.

The Oscar Store, which used to be a general store, is located off the Oscar Spur about 8 miles outside of Temple. Wherever you're coming from it's worth the drive.  That's because it's my kind of place.
