Somehow, if CMT was going to get into the scripted TV game by rescuing Nashville off ABC, it makes almost too much sense a Varsity Blues TV series would follow. The 1999 Texas football favorite is officially huddling up for a TV reboot, regardless of whether or not you want its life.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Country Music Television has ordered a pilot script from Paramount Television and writer W. Peter Iliff, who penned the original script for the James Van Der Beek-starring cult classic. The order plays double for CMT, who continue their push into scripted series after financing a fifth season of Nashville, and join the ever-fruitful movie TV craze.

The original 1999 movie saw the Dawson’s Creek star in the lead role of jaded high school football hero Johnny Moxon, among a cast that included Paul Walker, Amy Smart, Jon Voight, Ali Larter, Scott Caan and the late Ron Lester.

Presumably all your favorite Varsity Blues moments will make an appearance, from whipped-cream bikinis to someone not wanting someone else’s life, perhaps even Van Der Beek himself! In the meantime, watch the original trailer below.
