The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has officially asked the family of Travis Mireles to remove a roadside memorial, claiming that it is a distraction to drivers.

25-year-old Mireles passed away just south of Temple in a two-vehicle collision on March 28 on Old Highway 95 at FM 93. As a result, friends and family created a memorial as well as a petition, calling attention to the dangerous intersection that has taken many lives over the years.

However, TxDOT officials believe it is drawing attention, but not in a safe manner as it is a distraction to drivers. The family of the departed agreed to take parts of the memorial down, but not the whole thing. TxDOT is considering the compromise.

The family has also planned to adopt two miles of the highway in his honor.
