Music is a powerful engine, and it runs best late at night. The daylight walls between what was and what is get tissue paper thin. The sad past pulls near, the choices made, the regrets laid in, midnight's music brings them around you, and damn, that's delicious.

It's standing in the dark, in the backyard, listening to the crazy party up on the hill, and the one guy yelling. "BENNY! BENNY! BENNY"

It's driving through the night, your infant son in his car seat, the one wish on your lips being that the little red headed boy would just take the hint and GO TO SLEEP.

It's laying on the floor of your crappy efficiency apartment/hovel, cos you didn't have any money for a bed, listening to the rain thrash itself into a fierce craziness against your windows, wondering what that girl you crushed on in high school was doing, and just where the hell was your own life headed....

It's crushing on a girl at the club, becoming her friend, seeing her fall for another dude, seeing that dude called off to army training, and the girl finding out she's pregnant and you taking care of her while the dude's gone, and the phone call from him that you get at the end of your radio shift one night telling you she had the baby...

The sunlight will come, and all these memories will retreat, pale ghosts pulling back into their place in time, the day leaving you feeling slightly foolish for having wallowed while the night music played. Until next time.
