Radio commercial production can be a very...dicey game.  The variables that can send a spot into the dumper are many. And when you're pushing out spots five at a time, with sales people nipping at your attention, the clock ticking and the scripts piling up in your box like fall leaves, it's easier to produce a full on turkey than a glowing example of attention grabbing radio craft.

I, your humble servant,  Dave In The Cave, have been doing it for decades and, nine out of ten times, I still can stink up the joint with the hackiest of them.

One of the leading lights of radio Wisdom is a young fella named Dan O'Day. I genuflect at his feet every day, truly. He is on a one man crusade to end bad commercials. Thus and toward that end, he has designed what he calls THE AMAZING BAD SPOT GENERATOR!

...and it's pretty genius. One simple enters a few words, answers a multiple mad-lib questions and press ENTER. Bam! Out comes a spot bad enough to make the most hardened copywriter knash his/her teeth as he/she weeps into his/her laptop.

So this a.m., on the K-101.7 Poor Excuse For A Morning show, we used the Generator and tossed together one of the worst spots I've ever been involved with.

It's a true gem. I'm so proud and ashamed at the same time.

The next time you hear a commercial on the radio, remember all this, take pity on us who produced it, and run right out and buy the product, for the love of God. We've got families to feed.

Love,

Dave In The Cave
