Sometimes the Pop Gods smile down on an unknown band, a huge hit hits the charts from out of nowhere and a star, briefly, crosses the radio into legend. Then...well, that's pretty much it.

1983 for this one, a band, massive in their native Bay Area but little elsewhere, put together a wacky video (delineating a nightmare marriage scenario whose subtext of male fear of commitment I would not understand till decades later) that MTV found and played with great vigor, tossing this song into the national spotlight. Videos, MTV, remember them?

The combo was powerful enough to catch the interest of radio programmers, pushing the song all the way up to number two, kept out of the top spot by some guy named Jackson. Think the song was called, "Beat It"...or something like that. Even better, comedy god Weird Al got a hold of Kihn's song and turned it into "I Lost On Jeopardy." Kihn is on record has being deeply honored.

Kihn never another top ten hit again (but if you can, track down the album today's tune comes from and dig on "The Break Up Song" which is also really good) but continues to write, perform and record because...rock and roll. And that is the story of today's-
