All my life I've been a barbecue nut.  From an early age, red meat was the dominant protein on a middle-class table every night. From that, an appreciation grew for how that substance came to be on my plate. My dad's back yard grilling on special occasions drove this love. I'm sure your edperiences with meat are similar,  regardless of the twists and turns it may have taken later in life.

If I speak of beef with a reverence,  it's largely because post World War II America looked at it that way.  Modern conveniences met with old-fashioned service. Case in point:  Milk was brought into the home by delivery man who had a key  and could be trusted to open the fridge door and replace what needed to be replaced without either stealing anything or charging families out the wazoo.  The same animals who made porterhouse possible, provided that delicious milk. How is that not a miracle?!

Now I said all that to say all this: what's the deal with barbecue places closing on Sunday and Monday lock stock and barrel? Sure, there are a few places open, notably Miller's smokehouse in the erstwhile gas station  and restaurant Rudy's, which despite its reputation is actually very good barbecue. They play up their pedestrian appeal but they deliver the goods when it's all said and done.  And Millers, one of the best barbecue places in Texas and probably the whole world,  has a new schedule which has them open on Sunday. What a treat!

Here's something else:  where are all of the good barbecue drive-through windows? Kudos to dickies for having the stuff available without having to get out of the car. Days like today when the rain comes down in buckets make me not want to leave the house much  les get out of the car and find a place close to the building so I can dash in without getting completely soaked.  Every burger joint has a drive-through window or a car station like Sonic drive-in. I know barbecue is craftsmanship, and I don't want to ruin the good thing we have going in the same way that buffets ruined a lot of Chinese restaurants. But the pickings are slim to none in some areas when it comes to fast BBQ.

We have an election Tuesday. If this is what I'm complaining about, we are in fairly decent shape as a country. Just saying.
