Killeen police are investigating after a hit and run suspect fled from officers responding to an armed robbery Sunday afternoon.

Officers responded to a 911 call from Gateway Food Mart at 100 E. Hallmark at 5:32 p.m. When they arrived, witnesses told them a man had entered the store with his face covered, demanded money, then fled.

As police were searching for the suspect in the 200 block of E. Bryce, a witness reported that a Ford SUV hit another vehicle, then sped away. An officer attempted to stop the SUV, but the driver accelerated away. Officers gave chase until the SUV hit a dip at Florence and W. Hallmark, causing it to vault into the air and hit a telephone pole. The driver tried to flee, but collapsed due to a leg injury and was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

Police have not said if the two incidents are related.

The robbery suspect was described as a black man in jeans and a gray shirt with a red bandana covering his face. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 526-TIPS or online at www.bellcountycrimestoppers.com. Information can also be submitted via text message along with the word BELLCO to 274637. All information is confidential and anonymous, and a tip leading to an arrest could be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
