If Roger Waters was the brain behind the madness of Pink Floyd during its peak in the '70s, then David Gilmour was its heart & soul.  Today, March 6th, the great David Gilmour celebrates his 69th birthday.

To me, David Gilmour is not only the rhetorical "heart & soul" of Pink Floyd, but he's also the voice and the sound of the Pink Floyd that I love.  His vocals soaring over the top of his distinct guitar riffs and solos is what pulls me back to Pink Floyd time and time again.  I even love the post-Waters Pink Floyd because, again, Gilmour is the guy.

He may have just been a "replacement" or even "fill-in" for Syd Barrett, it was Gilmour that pulled the Floyd out of the psychedelic haze of the late '60s into the arena-rockers they became in the coming decades.

Happy 69th birthday, David Gilmour, and many more (albums and tours and birthdays).
