Can I say something at the outset?  I'm one of these people who believes in patriotism being a very good thing. Love of country is simply an extension of the love for one's neighbor, the golden rule that seems to find itself in the Scriptures and traditions of all the worlds major religions, not to mention humanism and just plain niceness.  When I see the American flag, I see a spirit of pride in embracing the best parts of all the cultures which have assimilated into our melting pot, the great American gumbo.

As you might expect, the talk of secession makes me very uncomfortable. I happen to think Texas and the rest of the United States complement each other very well.  The strength of the Texas economy is because of its relation to the rest of America.  We belong together. Talk secession and the nightmare scenarios involved in separating trade, infrastructure, free travel and so forth is almost too intense to consider.

Many question the legality of such abuse I move, even though other yahoos keep repeating the factoid of Texas ability to secede whenever it pleases. Guess what? It's a myth: Texas cannot legally secede.   Partly because Texas came out on the losing side of the Civil War, a conflict which greatly expanded federal authority.

To cease all this talk, conservative Texas governor Greg Abbott today made a statement on the matter.  Of course, like any good headstrong independent Texas elected official, he spoke of sovereignty and independence, those rugged qualities any true Texan embraces.

As he repeated on KTEM's  Sean Hannity program, Governor Abbott's standard phrase: "America wants to be more like Texas."  That's the kind of statement that gets a bevy of yee-haws, hats thrown in the air and random pistols fired in the air a la Yosemite Sam.

As an aside, the holier than thou pronouncements by the losing side in the Brexit debate, especially the smarty-pants on this side of the Atlantic with absolutely no skin in the game whatsoever, have been typical sour grapes. Stupid reactionary old people, they cry.  I don't know anything about the EU. If I were a UK voter, it would have been your job to convince me to vote to stay. You failed.  You should look at yourselves, your strategy, your tactics, your message for signs where you were not successful. Oh that's right, you're just an American who thinks you know it all without actually knowing anything. Leave it alone. They'll sort it out.

Now California, they should try. They'd probably split into three states in the process.
