Her name is Sally Ride, today would have been her 64th birthday.

On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride made history when she became the first American woman in space.  At 32 years old, she was also America's youngest astronaut ever, blasting off on the Challenger space shuttle. She made another mission into orbit the following year, also on board Challenger.

That is why Sally Ride gets a Google Doodle!

You know somebody posted a YouTube tribute to her.  (Thank goodness for people with time on their hands).

Sally Ride died on July 23, 2012, at the age of 61, seventeen months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

She inspired girls all over the planet to succeed in the worlds of math and science.
