So here's what happened to cause a delay in the start of Friday night's game between the Temple Wildcats and Belton Tigers in Tiger Stadium. Those who weren't there were wondering why, especially since not a drop of rain fell in the stadium.

Parking at the stadium was crazy. I knew this would be the case so I asked one of my colleagues to drop me off. I also had an ulterior motive: I wanted Trey from B106, our sister station, to see how big Friday Night Lights is in Texas. His eyes were popping out of his face, he could not believe this was a high school stadium with Jumbotron's and full press facilities. He also couldn't believe the sheer number of folks in attendance.   His listeners were coming up to him to say hello. I suspect he will be in full force at this coming week's Temple home opener against Round Rock.

Anyway, Trey and I made our way up to the press box to set up our equipment to broadcast the game. I was almost done when one of the ladies from Belton came and said, "there's a lightning storm and we have to evacuate at the press box."  I asked why considering we were inside. She said it was regulation because press boxes are sitting ducks for lightning bolts. Needless to say we were stunned and made our way to the elevator.  Trey was quicker than I am (no surprise there) and snagged himself a brisket sandwich on the way out. (They had a nice spread!) I'd had virtually nothing but protein shakes all day and had been at work since 5:00 AM that morning, so to say I was jealous would've been an understatement, especially since we went to go sit in the station vehicle and he had that delicious barbecue with him!

Regulations in Texas say a football game can only be resumed 30 minutes after a lightning strike. If there's no lightning in the area, after 30 minutes the all clear horn is blown.  We sat in the vehicle and kept seeing lightning striking in and around some freaky-looking skies, realizing each time a flash occurred, we were at least thirty minutes away from doing our job.

When the storm started to blow over, the folks at Belton said we can go back into the press box at our own risk. We kept seeing lightning in the distance - the whole area has to be clear of any dangerous lightning. We didn't get a chance to go back in the air until after 8:00 PM.

Now you know why we didn't start our broadcast at the proscribed time. Acts of God prevented it! Temple defeated Belton 28-20.
