Here's how Phil Collins discovered his gigantic booming eighties drum sound: Peter Gabriel took his drums away. While recording with Phil, something wasn't sitting well with Peter. To much...everything. So Peter pared Collins' drum set down to a snare, a kickdrum, a couple of toms and absolutely no cymbals. With some simple compression and two ambient mics, suddenly Phil's drum sounded eighty feet wide. And Phil was in love. And used it for the next decade.

Fast forward to 1981, and Frida Something Something Last Name, was the first member of ABBA to embark on a solo career. She needed to distance herself from the sugar sweet pop tra la la that was ABBA's stock and trade. She turned to Phil Collins as producer, drummer and background singer. Though it was written by future Alanis Morrisette producer Russ Ballard, the song in question is all Phil Collins from end to end. Phil's authorship is indeed pretty strong, and much like his producing duties with other acts like Phil Bailey, it's appears hard for Phil Collins to disappear into the background, to the point where it almost seems like Frida is being attacked by a massive sentient drum section.

Which, come to think of it, is also a pretty cool band name.

Uh, what was I saying?
