Enlist Jack White to help put together a movie, and odds are you'll end up with a pretty solid soundtrack. For proof, look no further than the cuts White rounded up for the upcoming American Epic: The Sessions set — including "2 Fingers of Whiskey," a collaboration between White and Elton John.

The Sessions set is just one of several releases arranged around American Epic, a multimedia project that also includes a four-hour documentary about the history and roots of American music and a five-disc box collecting painstakingly restored tracks from recording technology's earliest years. The Sessions tracks find contemporary artists presenting new versions of the songs unearthed for the film and box, underscoring the goal of the project as summed up by executive producer T Bone Burnett for Rolling Stone: "All of us have a common foe, and that's forgetfulness – where you forget where you came from and who you are. We all appreciate that link to our history. We need that."

American Epic starts airing on PBS stations today (May 16). Check out the trailer above, check your local listings for airdates, and take a look at the complete track listing for American Epic: The Sessions below. The Sessions collection is due out June 9 and available to pre-order now.
