The Scott & White Children's Miracle Network Radiothon is just a little over two weeks away.  I can't help but think back to the last radiothon that I was involved in that was about three and a half years ago.  I was somewhat new to radio at that point when I happened into one of the most special and memorable experiences of my life.

I didn't really understand what it was that I was getting involved in until the time came to go and do some preliminary interview with some of the children that had been treated and cared for by the amazing Children's hospital over at Scott & White.  Our staff was given a tour and we got to see lots of the equipment and medical advances that were offered, but nothing hit home like the children did.

You get the chance to sit and talk with these children that have been through more in their short lives that you have ever even considered having to deal with.  If you really open your eyes and heart and let them in, then you have a companion for the rest of your life.

Leading up to the radiothon I am going to do my best to share a little piece of these amazing children that I have had the true privilege of meeting and letting have a little piece of my heart.

Looking back through pictures I came across a few that I took of Pecos.  He was in the Children's Hospital to be treated for cancer.  I was immediately drawn to him because when I met him he had on a tank top, shorts and his cowboy boots.  I sat on the floor and we played for a little bit before he warmed up to me, but once he let down his shield there was an immediate connection.  He quietly informed me that I didn't have to worry about anything because he had a knife.  When he saw my look of suspicion he stood up, pulled up his tank top, dropped his shorts to the top of his cowboy boots and there, tucked neatly in his tighty whities was a plastic knife.  At that point I realized that no matter what happened, we were safe!  Here is a picture of him showing off his knife after I convinced him that we didn't need to be standing around in our undies.

He loved riding through the hallways in his little three wheeler and causing havoc on guitar hero in the play room.  We also discussed how when he didn't feel too good he was able to go watch movies in his room on the DVD player that the hospital had in there for him.  He always felt better after watching his favorite movie of all time... Lonesome Dove.

Every child that is sick and being taken care of by this amazing hospital that we are lucky to have in our community has a story like Pecos.  Please tune into our radiothon on US105 on September 19th and 20th from 6am to 6pm.  You can also help by visiting any of our station websites or going by one of our amazing local businesses that are acting as Change Bandits for this great event.  You can drop your change off through September 20th at Greenleaf Landscape and Garden Center in Harker Heights (Click For Map).
