Killeen police have released the identity of a Belton man who led officers on a high speed chase Sunday.

39-year-old Dandy Meraz Ortega was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of evading arrest with a motor vehicle. Police say an officer tried to stop Ortega for speeding in the 500 block of West Central Texas Expressway shortly before 1 p.m. Ortega sped away and turned onto Jasper Road. The chase continued on Trimmier Road and Veteran's Memorial Blvd. before Ortega struck another vehicle, then attempted to flee on foot.

Officers were able to outrun Ortega, and he was taken into custody. He reportedly told police that he fled because he didn't have a driver's license.

Ortega was in the Bell County Jail Wednesday morning. His bail was set at $20,000.
