It was on this day in 1977 that I watched a relative have a complete meltdown.

Back in the 70's, I was a swinger. Not the key in the bowl type of swinger, but an actual swinger. I was 10 at the time and I loved to play on the swing set at my grandparents farm.

On this day in 1977 I was swinging when one of my Aunts came screaming out of the house.

"He's dead! He's dead!"

Of course we come rushing in thinking that our grandfather/father has had a heart attack or something. Turns out she heard the announcement that Elvis Presley had died.

She was a fan. I was pissed because I was ready to try the "Around the World" trick. It was probably lucky that the announcement came when it did. Just might have saved my life.

I couldn't believe someone would act so insane over a person she never met. Of course a few years later John Lennon got shot and I saw all the footage of women screaming at the Beatles concerts. It was a good lesson for me, people can be nuts. When I got in the radio game, if a death came across the wire, I always took the announcement seriously because odds were, there were going to be a lot of people overreacting. Possibly. Well, more than likely.

Aunt running and screaming hysterically. That's what I remember when Elvis died.

What do you remember from that day?
