After a disappointing start to the season, the Texas Longhorns today reassigned veteran baseball coach Augie Garriido to back office duties according to reports.

No offense to anyone, but doing this on a holiday and making the announcement when most people are paying attention is kind of a chicken move.  He's a legendary figure and deserves better than, "oh by the way, this happened."

OK, we know the guy is the twilight of his career; not many 77-year-olds are leading the charge on any kind of team much less in the young and vital world of collegiate baseball.  We get it.  Such a move was done to allow him to retire with dignity without using the words "removed," "dismissed," the real meaning "fired," or the cruel-sounding "terminated." ( HR people, sadistic managers like that term. The rest of us see Arnold Schwarzenegger and sunglasses.)

Augies been adamant he's not going anywhere, but the calls for his ouster (another synonym) and his ornery obstinance -  and truth be told, at his point in life, after nearly 2000 career victories, he can be as cantankerous as he wants to be - meant that he'd have to be pushed. So be it. Still, did you have to do it on a holiday? Especially one that honors the deceased?! Arguably, not a classy move.

BONUS;  we could let this go without reliving one of Augies more, ahem, colorful moments.  I wouldn't turn this up too loud, even if we did choose to air the bleeped spoof version with Norm MacDonald.
