Amazing Low-Cal, Low-Carb Ice Cream Now Available at H-E-B

Ice cream is one of the great culinary inventions of our time.  It is one of the single most addicting substances on planet earth. And it's absolutely wonderful.

About eight years ago, I lost 130 pounds from my frame. I changed the way I ate,  I started paying attention to nutrition labels,  my whole focus on food had to be re-learned.  I found out however that there were some foods that I just could not shake no matter how bad they are for me. Pizza and hamburgers are high on that list. Ice cream is in the top three for certain.

In recent years, I've become somewhat of an ice cream connoisseur.  If I'm going to cheat, it better be worth it. I'll pay extra for damn good ice cream.  I can look at the ingredient list of an ice cream pint and see if it's worth it.  And easy indicator is if the product itself is referred to as ice cream or frozen dairy dessert. Quite frankly, if I see the latter I will not buy it under any circumstances.

Halo Top is not a frozen dairy dessert. It is a light ice cream, that's what it's called. And it's ice cream in every sense of the word and it's delicious.

It's also around 250-280 calories per pint depending on the flavor.  It's a new product that's getting rave reviews across the country. Thanks to H-E-B, our Texas grocery chain that is more awesome than most, the new product is available to us in Central Texas.

I have tried four flavors of Halo Top  and I can tell you this birthday cake flavor will blow your mind.  It is truly amazing. How could something that tastes like this the low calorie and low carb? I try not to ask too many questions and go back to eating.

The chocolate flavor is also fantastic.  The chocolate mocha chip flavor was tasty, but it wasn't that much different from the ordinary chocolate flavor. I guess I was seeking a more robust, darker chocolate flavor.

The vanilla may take a little getting used to given how high quality ice cream made with high quality vanilla is so readily available and people have an idea of how  good vanilla is supposed to taste.  It's a flavor very ingrained in the common American palate.  Still, I was very pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the vanilla flavor.

I've not been able to find other flavors including strawberry and the delicious sounding lemon cake flavor. Strawberry and lemon are two of my favorite flavors and I eager to try them.

You can find Halo Top in the Belton H-E-B and the location at the Loop and 31st St.  curiously, I did not see it in the original H-E-B in Temple. I suspect as word gets out how wonderful this ice cream is, that you'll have no problem finding it.
